Design and Build Quality

With an elegantly understated design, the Primare SP25 Prisma is available in both Black and Titanium finishes, catering to diverse aesthetic preferences. The build quality is robust, indicative of the brand's reputation for durable and meticulously crafted audio components. Measuring 430 x 405 x 145 mm and weighing in at 10 Kg, it strikes a balance between heft and manageability, fitting seamlessly into a range of home theater environments. The practicality of its design extends to its user interface, which is intuitive despite the complexity underneath.

Core Features and Technologies

The 11-channel configuration of the SP25 Prisma positions it as a powerhouse capable of handling elaborate speaker setups. At its heart, the dual eight-channel DAC chips promise exceptional audio fidelity by converting digital audio into a smoother, more analog-like signal with minimal loss of quality. The inclusion of Hypex UCD250LP power technology ensures reliable amplification, delivering 145 watts into 8-ohms and a robust 250 watts into 4-ohm speaker loads when in stereo mode, catering to demanding speakers and listening levels.

Audio Performance

The SP25 Prisma's support for advanced audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS X is a nod to its home cinema credentials, allowing for a truly three-dimensional sound space. Dirac Live Room Correction technology is a standout feature, adapting the audio output to the unique acoustics of the listening room for optimal performance. Whether it's a subtle dialogue or the roar of an explosion, the power delivery is cleanly executed, ensuring a compelling audio experience across various speaker configurations.

Video Support and Processing

Video technology does not take a backseat in this preamplifier. It accommodates 4K dynamic HDR switching, Dolby Vision, and HDR 10+, ensuring that the visual experience matches the auditory one. HDMI 2.0b inputs with eARC support are included, allowing for high-quality audio return channels and ensuring compatibility with the latest 4K content sources.

Streaming and Connectivity

The Prisma network player is a central hub for music enthusiasts, offering access to popular streaming services such as Prisma Radio, TIDAL, and Qobuz. The SP25 Prisma goes beyond simple playback with comprehensive streaming features, including AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, Chromecast, Roon, and Spotify Connect, supporting HiFi-ready streaming. Its multi-room and multi-zone capabilities mean that this preamplifier can become the heart of an interconnected audio ecosystem throughout the home.

User Experience

The interface and remote control of the SP25 Prisma are designed with the user in mind, providing a seamless interaction with the device's extensive features. The setup process is straightforward, allowing users to integrate the preamplifier into their existing home theater systems with minimal fuss. However, those new to advanced preamplifiers may face a learning curve as they acquaint themselves with the rich suite of features and customization options.

Pros and Cons

The Primare SP25 Prisma excels in delivering an immersive home cinema experience, backed by advanced audio processing technologies and Dirac Live Room Correction. The dual DAC chips ensure high-quality sound, and the Prisma network player's streaming capabilities are a boon to music lovers. However, the limited output options, particularly the lack of pre-outs for the fronts and the desire for more subwoofer outputs in its price range, may deter some users. Additionally, uncertainties about the Dirac version and specifics of ARC implementation may require clarification for discerning buyers.

Comparisons with Competitors

When placed alongside its competitors, the Primare SP25 Prisma stands out for its robust feature set and audio processing capabilities. Its price point demands comparison with other high-end preamplifiers, where it holds its own, especially in terms of room correction technology and streaming integration. However, potential buyers should consider the balance of features, connectivity options, and price when making their decision.

Final Thoughts

The SP25 Prisma is a compelling proposition for the home theater enthusiast seeking a blend of high-quality audio, versatile streaming options, and advanced room correction. It is best suited for users who value audio quality and are looking to build a comprehensive, connected home entertainment system. While it has its limitations in terms of connectivity, for those who can leverage its strengths, the Primare SP25 Prisma is a worthy centerpiece to a modern, immersive home cinema experience.
