The Vision and Initial Challenges

The client approached us with a clear goal: convert a previously unused upstairs room into a dedicated home theater. However, the room was far from ideal:

Irregular Shape: Asymmetrical walls and structural supports created challenges for speaker placement.

Height Constraints: Limited ceiling space and a thin profile above the screen for HVAC ducting.

Heat Management: Being on the third floor in a tropical climate, keeping the room cool was essential.

Despite these challenges, the room’s potential was undeniable. With careful planning, we maximized the space to deliver an exceptional home theater experience.

The Equipment: Best-in-Class Performance

Audio System

The client’s preference for Perlisten Audio drove the design of the sound system, resulting in a powerful and immersive setup:

Front Soundstage: Two Perlisten S7 Tower Speakers in ebony gloss flank the Perlisten S7C Center Channel, delivering crisp dialogue and dynamic soundscapes.

Surround and Rear Speakers: Two pairs of Perlisten S4S surround speakers, mounted on walls, provide enveloping sound. These wedge-shaped speakers are designed for versatile placement.

Ceiling Speakers: Focal 1000 Series in-ceiling speakers were selected to complement Perlisten’s beryllium driver technology. While not an exact match, they were EQ’d via the processor to achieve optimal tonal balance.

Subwoofers: Dual Perlisten D215s subwoofers with proprietary push-pull technology ensure deep, impactful bass that’s both precise and powerful.

Processing and Amplification

At the heart of the system is the Trinnov Altitude 16 Audio Processor paired with the Trinnov Amplitude 16 Amplifier, offering unmatched sound clarity and configurability. The use of XLRF-to-DB25 connectors simplified the setup, reducing cable clutter and ensuring a clean installation.

Video System

For the visual experience, the client chose the ultra-rare JVC DLA-NZ900 25th Anniversary Edition Projector:

Limited Edition: Only 25 units produced, featuring premium components for peak performance.

Calibrated Display: Professionally tuned by Chris Deering to pair with the Stewart Filmscreen StudioTek 130 G4, a 140” 16:9 screen known for its impeccable color reproduction and brightness.

To complete the experience, the client opted for JMar Extra-Wide Loungers, offering unmatched comfort. These spacious, reclining chairs are perfect for both movie nights and midday siestas.

Design and Installation Process

Speaker Placement

Due to the room’s asymmetrical layout, precise speaker placement was crucial:

Side Surrounds: Positioned slightly behind the seating area to accommodate structural supports.

Rear Surrounds: Mounted on the rear wall to provide balanced surround effects.

In-Ceiling Speakers: Strategically installed to avoid HVAC ducting while maintaining proper alignment for Dolby Atmos overhead effects.

HVAC and Cooling

Given the tropical climate, retaining the existing HVAC system above the screen was non-negotiable. This thin-profile design ensured the room stayed cool without major structural modifications.
