Transforming a Flex Room into a Stealth 5.4.6 Dolby Atmos Home Theater

by Dreamedia AV 10 Apr 2025

Imagine having a media room that vanishes into your home’s aesthetic when not in use—but still delivers spine-tingling audio and cinematic video when it’s time to relax. That’s exactly what we created in this modern mountain home nestled in the Rockies—a fully custom stealth home theater featuring a 5.4.6 Dolby Atmos system, recessed screen, and precision-built equipment rack.

Designing Around the Room

The room started as a general-purpose flex area—a space shared with a hot tub, angled ceilings, and unconventional layout. Instead of seeing challenges, we saw opportunity. Using in-wall speakers and a drop-down screen, we were able to build a theater that disappears when not in use.

To maximize screen size and visibility from both the hot tub and the seating area, we flipped the room layout and added swivel chairs for conversation. The result? A multifunctional setup that doesn’t compromise on performance or style.

Speaker Configuration: Full Focal 300 Series

We installed a 5.4.6 Dolby Atmos layout using Focal’s 300 series in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. The front LCR setup uses in-wall speakers, while the center and all six Atmos channels are powered by the IC LCR5s. Each tweeter was manually angled toward the listening position for clean high frequencies and optimal sound staging.

At the low end, four SVS SB17 Ultra sealed subwoofers were distributed across the front and back of the room. The result is deep, chest-thumping bass that never overwhelms the mids or highs.

Projector and Video System

We recessed a Dragonfly tab-tensioned, ALR (ambient light rejecting) drop-down screen directly into the ceiling. It pairs with an Epson LS12000 projector for stunning 4K HDR clarity—delivering that “wow” factor whether the lights are on or off.

Control and Amplification

A Denon AVR-X6800H powers the entire system and lives inside a Strong FS series rack along with a URC MRX-5 control processor and a Sonos Port. Whether it's movies or streaming music throughout the home, everything is controlled via handheld remote, wall-mounted touchscreen, or mobile app.

Installation Details and Rack Setup

Our team handled every detail—from speaker placement and wire routing to drywall repair and final paint touch-ups. Structural ceiling reinforcements were added for the projector housing, while the rack houses a complete power management system, receiver, and control units with a clean and professional finish.

A Seamless, Multi-Zone Audio Experience

The customer’s original speakers were repurposed for additional zones, including the bar and patio. With a Sonos amp, they can sync music across zones or keep the theater audio independent. It’s a seamless whole-home audio experience designed to entertain in every corner of the house.

Client Testimonial

“I never thought this room could be a home theater. The Dreamedia team proved me wrong. The setup, the sound, the ease of use—it’s better than the movie theater. My friends love it. Even my wife can control everything with one button. It’s perfect.”

Final Thoughts

What makes this build truly special is the balance between performance and discretion. With all components concealed and a minimalist finish, the system blends beautifully into the home while delivering a full-on cinematic experience. This is what we call a true stealth home theater.
